Don Miguel owns a number of strawberry fields in Palos de la Frontera in Andalusia. The strawberries are now ripe, but there’s no sign of the seasonal workers and the farmer is waiting for them, as they should be picking the fruit before it spoils. Alvaro, Don Miguel’s chief labourer, suggests hiring some illegal African immigrants who are camping in a forest nearby, but Don Miguel doesn’t want them to work for him if they don’t have the necessary documents. Incidentally, Don Miguel finds out that the previous year Alvaro had badly mistreated the Romanian women who were working for him on his farm.
